About the Artist

Genesis is a Dominican-American, queer, Philadelphia-based self-taught artist whose work explores the intersections of identity, culture, and personal experience. Influenced by artists such as Mickalene Thomas and Kerry James Marshall, Genesis draws inspiration from their powerful portrayals of Black identity and nuanced storytelling. She began painting in 2020 during the pandemic, starting with commissions for friends and family before discovering a profound passion for the medium and its ability to convey layered emotions and ideas while helping to pass the time during the stillness of a paused world. Her artwork is characterized by bright colors to create a strong, immediate impact for the viewer.

In addition to her artistic work, Genesis holds a Bachelor’s in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing from La Salle University. This foundation enables her to share her art with a wider audience, manage commissions, and sustain her creative practice as an independent artist. Her notable projects include exhibiting at the Germantown Art and Sound Show (2023), live painting at the Sisters Laying Down Hands Po-Jazzy Celebration (2023), participating in The Good Mother Myth exhibit at Small Works Philly (2025), Palette and Poetry (2025), and multiple Pancakes and Booze shows since 2022. In August 2025 and January 2026, she collaborated with her friend and fellow artist Jalen Hutchins on two small-scale murals at Pop’s Learning Center in West Philadelphia, celebrating the vital role of children in their communities. This project strengthened her commitment to fostering youth belonging and representation through art.
